Let Us Get Started

This Week: El Gibhor (Mighty God)

Think About this:

Gibhor” means “strong” or “mighty”. Combined with “El”, it exclaims to us that YHWH is The Strong and Mighty God, as declared in …

Ah Sovereign LORD, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm.  Nothing is too hard for You.” Jeremiah 32:17

" You show loving kindness to thousands and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them - the Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the Lord of hosts.  You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for Your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings."Jeremiah 32:18-19

Nothing is too hard for God.  Let that truth settle in your mind and heart for a few moments.  It is an amazing thought.  The evidence of this truth is always everywhere, visible, and invisible.  The air we breathe, the sun that warms the earth, and the unseen galaxies in outer space were all made by God’s great power.  The first recorded words He spoke, “Let there be light,” began an incredible relationship between God and the people He created for His glory.

These passages in scripture reminds us that nothing is too difficult for El Gibhor - Mighty God.  He made the heavens and the Earth.  He performed signs and wonders.  He brought the people out of Egypt into a land flowing with milk and honey.  He decides which army will win each battle.  And He decides how each person shall be rewarded or punished for their deeds.  El Gibhor is a powerful and mighty warrior, and yet this passage shows Him as just, and a rewarder for those who diligently seek Him.

Why is it so hard for us to believe that God is all-powerful?  On one hand, we take His power for granted in many ways.  The air we breathe, gravity, the earth’s rotation, and waking up in the morning are all gifts from His hands.  How often do we thank God for these gifts or even give them a second thought?  And yet on the other hand, we worry and fret over the details of life.  Money, relationships, and jobs can send us into a tailspin of anxiety and despair.

Jeremiah 32:17is like a deep, calming breath.  When overwhelming thoughts and feelings begin to inch their way into our minds, we can remember that our Sovereign LORD made the heavens and the earth by His great power; and nothing is too hard for Him.  Whether big or small, important, or mundane, seen, or unseen – nothing is too difficult for God Almighty.

We must intentionally practice remembering and focusing on the character of God and His mighty works.  For all eternity, we will ever run out of reasons to praise and trust in Him.  This is not an automatic reaction to stress, however – at least not at first.  But it is a spiritual discipline that can be cultivated in the heart and mind.  When doubts and fears come, when outside pressures seem stronger than faith, we must choose to take in the deep, calming breath of God’s Word and rest there.  Remember, He said Himself; nothing is too hard for your God.

But how does one reconcile a compassionate God who shows loving kindness with a mighty warrior?  By remembering that man is not God's enemy, but evil.  Therefore "the battle is the Lord's in the battle against evil(1 Samuel 17:47).  It is in that battle that God will rule with a rod of iron to destroy His enemies.  When it comes to you and me Our Mighty God reaches down from Heaven to save us with His Mighty Right Hand by sending His One and only Son to save us.

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders.  And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6) Our El Gibhor, Our Mighty God has a Mighty Love for us!

Read and Meditate on these Scriptures thatReveal God as El Gibhor:

Job 9:4, Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV), Psalm 136:12, Ephesians 6:10, Isaiah 26:4

*Listen to or sing along to the hymn “To God Be the Glory”. Take quiet time to reflect the meaning of those words in the hymn.

Song: To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory great things He hath done

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son.

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin

And opened the life gate that all may go in.

REFRAIN

And to God be the glory

To God be all praise

We live for Your glory.

All of our days

To God be all glory and praise.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood

To every believer the promise of God

The vilest offender who truly believes.

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives. REFRAIN

Great things he hath taught us great things he hath done

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son

But purer and higher and greater will be

Our wonder our transport when Jesus we see. REFRAIN
